“I believe, in order to understand; and I understand, the better to believe.”
—St. Augustine
There wasn’t much left of me after him. He had entered my life in one brilliant moment, and swooped out just as suddenly.

Five Big Questions
Joshua 5:1-9
Obedience When You’re Most Vulnerable
Summary:
The Canaanite kings heard that the Lord had dried up the Jordan River for Israel to cross. Their hearts melted. There was no longer any spirit in them. They were paralyzed with fear while Israel camped at Gilgal. This was the moment God chose to command circumcision. Every fighting-age male in the camp. Flint knives. Mass incapacitation. Days of immobilization while the men healed—unable to fight, unable to flee, vulnerable as newborns if an enemy decided to strike. The command must have seemed reckless. This is not the time for an experiment in covenant renewal. Every tactical instinct would scream against it. But Joshua obeyed, and the entire army submitted to the knife. What Joshua didn’t know was what God had already revealed in verse 1. While Israel lay healing in their tents, unable to lift a sword, their enemies cowered behind city walls, paralyzed by fear. God had already neutralized the threat before Israel became vulnerable. The Lord rolled away the reproach of Egypt. Covenant people, set apart, defenseless before their enemies—and utterly safe in the shadow of God’s protection.
Application:
Victory often requires vulnerability at precisely the moment you feel you can least afford it. God asks you to lay down your defenses when the threat feels most real. To trust him with your finances when money is tight. To forgive when you’re still wounded. To step into ministry when your schedule is already stretched. The timing seems reckless. But what you don’t see is what God has already set in motion. While you obey, God protects. Your vulnerability in obedience is not carelessness—it’s faith. And faith is never wasted on a God who goes before you to prepare what you cannot see. ntent
